i have started a mini-collection to represent those who have had their numbers retired by a team in honor of their career or significance to the franchise. and, while i like to see cards that show how individual teams honor their retired numbers
as well as cards that capture the number retirement itself
i am only including field personnel in the collection, so that means no cards for bud selig (number 1 by the brewers), gene autry (number 26 for the angels), august busch jr (number 85 for the cardinals as seen on the card above), or cleveland fans (number 455 by the guardians). i am also including players and managers such as rogers hornsby who are recognized by a franchise even though they played prior to numbers being assigned.
the collection does not include numbers that had been retired by teams and then brought back in to circulation, but does include numbers retired by inactive franchises. this means that the marlins' number 5 that was retired for executive carl barger, the reds' number 5 that was retired for willard hershberger, and the blue jays' number 12 that was retired for roberto alomar are excluded, but the numbers retired by the expos franchise are part of the collection.
i am not including cards for others such as keli mcgregor, william shea, and walter o'malley whose initials and/or name are displayed alongside the rockies', mets', and dodgers' retired numbers, respectively. finally, it pains me to say but i am not including announcers either - primarily due to a lack of cards. the dodgers have recognized vin scully and jaime jarrin in the same manner as the players who have had their numbers retired by the team, and the cardinals and mets have done the same for jack buck, ralph kiner and bob murphy, respectively.
